Ideas for an unforgettable vacation in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is still slowly healing from wounds inflicted by the war. Despite this, the country is attractive for its unusual coastline with an incredible number of beaches, cities with ancient history and a suburb with lush greenery.
Due to the fact that the infrastructure of this wonderful emerald island is constantly developing, more and more tourists are coming here to enjoy an unforgettable vacation.
Here are some ideas that will make your holiday in Sri Lanka exciting and unforgettable.
Travel the island by rail

One of the easiest ways to travel around the country – not to mention the fact that it is also the cheapest – Sri Lanka railway connection.
This path runs through the picturesque landscapes of the country, from unusual tea gardens and monumental rice fields to the famous coastline. Maximum aesthetic pleasure can be obtained by following three routes: from Colombo to Kandy, from Kandy to Ella’s tea estates and from Colombo to Galle.
In Sri Lanka, there are two competing elite rail services, Expo Rail and Rajadhani Express.

Both provide quality service and allow you to travel in first class cars. They are controlled by private operators. They are responsible for the movement of regular trains that run on the Sri Lankan railways.
Rajadhani Express trains can be found on three routes that run along the two main railway lines of Sri Lanka. ExpoRail serves over 60 destinations on four different routes.

Walk the Pette Market in Colombo

The Petta Market in Colombo is one of the city’s most important shopping centers.
Petta is a popular neighborhood in Colombo, known for its historic buildings and retail outlets.
A great place to start your tour of this old, rich history district is the Petta Market, located on Main Street. This is the place where Senegalese, Tamil and Muslim merchants are inviting to buy their goods.

Here you can find almost everything, from fragrant spices and dried fish to fabrics of unusual colors. It is not surprising that Pette is considered an important shopping center in Sri Lanka.
From here you can go to Morskaya Street, where designer jewelry and jewelry are sold. To the south of the Old Town Hall, sellers sell exotic vegetables and fruits.
In this area you should visit the impressive Wolfendal Church, built in 1749, and the historic Jami-Ul-Alfara Mosque, which was built in 1909.

Here are some more wonderful ideas for an unforgettable vacation!

Visit the sacred Golden Temple of Dambulla

Dambulla Cave Temple in Sri Lanka is also known as the Golden Temple. Behind the rustic, unremarkable facade is a host of masterfully executed magic frescoes and unusual ancient artifacts.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this complex of cave sanctuaries dates back to the 1st century BC. The five main holy sites create an unusual architectural group that rises 160 meters above sea level.

The second cave – known as the sanctuary of the great kings – is considered the most impressive. Wattagomini Abhaya arranged it, placing here a huge number of unique Buddha statues in unusual poses, as well as altars of the deities of the Hindu pantheon.
At the top of the complex, visitors can observe how the sun sets languidly over the horizon, highlighting the surrounding houses.
If you combine a trip to the sacred caves of Dambulla with a visit to the nearby ancient city of Sigiriya, you can get an unforgettable experience. The best way to do this is to settle in the central city of Sri Lanka – Kandy, 70 kilometers from Dambulla.

Visit Fort Galle

One of the oldest lighthouses in Sri Lanka can be found in Fort Galle. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
in the sixteenth century the Portuguese settled here and built the incredible city of Galle. Being a major transit point on the trade route of ships that carried precious spices, it served as a link between Holland and England.
It is very convenient to travel around the city on foot or by bicycle. The traveler’s attention is easily attracted by the bizarre street map, old warehouses, unusual houses and churches.

Fort Galle occupies about 130 acres. You can start your adventure with a walk along the fort wall, hitting the National Maritime Museum right in front of the post office.
Galle has fabulous restored historic hotels. To fully experience the atmosphere of the city, it is worth staying here for a couple of days.
In terms of weather, December to April is the best time to visit Galle.
